You know you’ve been overly exposed to your son’s video game when you pass a truck with pallets of fresh sod and “Mine Craft” is the first thing you think of.
Mine Craft – the world in which everything is square. You create and build out of textured cubes. Mitchell has been into Mine Craft for a while now and I try to keep up on it by reading articles, online stuff and watch him play. But it was last night that I got my first real taste of online gaming personally.
Mitchell was in bed and I decided to play Mine Craft on the laptop he normally plays on. And well I pretty much made a fool of myself – or himself actually – because I was playing as him??? Err yeah, I was. You play this game in first person? I swear I thought that was an English 101 term. So looking at your computer you see the back of the head of your person but you get the head on view of your space. I’m sure there’s a more gamey way of saying these things.
Well, I couldn’t get the dude to move. So I’m all slapping arrows, scrolling, right clicking, you name it trying to get him to walk forward, sideways, fly, anything. I end up being upside down on my head and just going round and round.
No big deal though. I can figure it out in time. But time went by and I’m still busting Michael Jackson moves. I was getting frustrated with myself.
Then I start seeing comments on the sidebar thread where people are saying some not-so-nice abbreviations. And then they’re calling me a “total noob!” Ha!
I just got bullied and I’m a 40 year old.
I wanted to snap back an say, “I’m old enough to be your Granny’s daughter and I’d wash your mouth out with soap if I could reach across this screen and shove a bar of Dove down it.” But I decided that wasn’t very kind or self controlling. I really just needed to move my man but I was still stuck in place turning circles. It was so bad. I finally decided I would be doing Mitchell a huge favor by logging off effective immediately. And so I did. But I’m telling on those big meanies tomorrow morning at the breakfast table! Yeah, Mitchell’s going to kill me in the morning when I tell him I played Mine Craft and talked to people too.
I will say this…It was an eye opener just by sitting in his seat for five minutes and never taking one step forward – or backwards – or sideways for that matter. It pays to get a view.
For those who might be freaked out by the game now…..don’t be. Mine Craft can be played as a single player. You run into these issues when you play with other people and on public servers. I’ve got to do some more investigating to see which servers are better to play on. There are some that are adamant about not using bad language and are more kid friendly. Apparently I was on a server that was not that way???? I don’t know. I’m still learning about this stuff. Feel free to chime in on the conversation especially if you’re a Christian gamer. It’s a different world out there and I’m trying to understand it.
