Every year I choose a different verse to pray over our kids at the beginning of school. Typically it’s a different verse for each of them but this school year I’m praying the same verse for both of them because it’s simply rich. We have teenagers and when I found these verses I knew it was what I’d be praying over them this year.
“But I want you to be wise at what is good, and innocent at what is evil.” Romans 16:19
Nutshell context: Paul was writing to Christians and warning them about false teachers who were deceiving naive people. He didn’t want them to get sucked into the web of false teaching. This verse comes on the heels of his warning.
As a Mom, praying scripture is a life line for my kids. This time every year I talk about a group I’m in called Mom’s in Prayer where we make praying scripture over our children a priority and incorporate it weekly. So if we were praying this verse for our kids I would pray aloud this verse with Mitchell’s name in it. Like this: “Father, you want Mitchell to be wise at what is good, and innocent at what is evil.” Then we add our own words to the prayer… “Will you give him a desire for good things over evil things. Help him to discern what is good and what is evil.” And then whoever I’m praying with would also pray that verse over Mitchell and would add a sentence or two of their own and then we would pray for that person’s child in the same way. Each week we pray a different verse over our kids and our kids teachers. We choose one child to pray for each week.
When I choose a verse at the beginning of the school year to pray for my kids I write it out on 3 index cards and put them in 3 different “hot spots” that I know I’ll see. One is in my Bible, on my desk and in my agenda behind their class schedule.
If you are local and would like to be a part of our Mom’s in Prayer group please contact me. We’d love to have you! We will be praying on Friday mornings on my front porch from 8:30-9:30am and this group is open to anyone who is praying for a child in school. Grandmothers, Aunts, Moms – no matter the age of your student.
Happy New School Year Everyone!
