One of the most beautiful but most economical ways to decorate inside your home is with fresh flowers. It doesn’t have to be roses, hydrangeas or peonies because many of us don’t have that growing. But chances are you have some ivy growing somewhere in your yard. Just a little clipping of ivy stuck in a small vase can make for a simple touch of warmth inside. Your other option would be to snag flowers out of a neighbors yard. I’ve been knowing to do that a few times. Pre-salvation days. Actually that’s not true at all. Now I’ve lied and stolen and lied about my stealing. Hello, my name is Melody and I’m a flower thief even though I have them in my back yard.
I had an epiphany though a few years back and decided to start asking people if I could have small clipping of their flowers IF they had tons of them. Like I wouldn’t be so bold as to ask for the ONE pink flower they had on their bush. But if they had a lot and I was hosting an event coming up and didn’t want to spend the money on flowers I’d ask if could have a few. But be ware, it can back fire. I did this a few years ago at a house nearby. A man came to the door and was so nice and he said I could have a clipping of their flowers. Well, fast forward to this past December when Randy and I attended a neighborhood Christmas party. We were meeting and greeting and I noticed a man that looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. As I was shaking his hand saying, “You look so familiar…..” it hit me. He immediately said, “Yeah, you came by asking for flowers one day.” My face turned so red and I thought I was going to die right there. See I will ask but I still know it’s a kind of a tacky thing to do. Here’s my reasoning…..I am so glad to share our flowers with other people and have for many years and most people are glad to share theirs as well. One day I’m going to stop clipping flowers of others peoples yards. But not today.
These are my blue hydrangeas from the back yard that I’m still in awe of – our God is amazing. I still can’t get over that he landed us in a house with over 10 gorgeous hydrangea bushes! All you locals – come grab some and I mean it! Don’t have to ask just clip away. Same with the magnolias. And hasta (Nancy Verdi). My flowers are your flowers!
You might be thinking “who has time to bring in flowers for my family – they’re lucky to have clean underwear right now. I think. I hope… they have clean underwear.” I know, I get it. What motivated me to start clipping flowers again were these powerful but simple words from Korie Robertson on the Live Original blog. I love this entire family with all my heart. They are the real deal Jesus loving people.
Well friends, have flower clipping!
