It’s rare that I do this but I’m being super direct in today’s post about a best-selling author that droves of Christian women can’t get enough of. I too jumped on the bandwagon when Rachel Hollis’s book Girl, Wash Your Face first came out. It was everywhere and I kept hearing how amazing it was. First I went on Rachel’s Instagram and fell in love with her awesome pictures. She’s funny and delightful. Her kids are totally adorable. She’s direct and helpful. So I ordered her book and she drew me in with her humor and wit. She is described as being everyone’s big sister, telling you what you need to hear.
But
Hollis doesn’t claim to be a Christian author to my knowledge. I’m not sure she’s a Christian but because she mixes in scripture with some of her “sayings” I think people assume she is. Many women are looking to Hollis for their daily dose of spiritual encouragement which is concerning because so much of it is contrary to what God says.
Here’s what I mean….these are just a few direct quotes from Girl, Wash Your Face and from her Instagram page.
“Just because you believe it doesn’t mean it’s true for everyone. . . Faith is one of the most abused instances of this. We decide that our religion is right; therefore, every other religion must be wrong.” That’s what Rachel says. But here’s what Jesus says, “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
“Focus on what you think of you,” Rachel teaches us in her books and seminars. This is like a double whammy self-absorbed thought. Because you’re not only focusing on yourself but you’re focusing on yourself thinking about yourself. But God says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Phil. 2:3.
“This is your LIFE. You are meant to be the Hero of your own story.” I find this contrary to what I Cor. 10:31 tells us, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” That makes God the hero, not myself.
“There’s such incredible power in understanding that you are in control.” She thinks that’s incredibly powerful but
“Who you are is defined by the next decision you make, not the last one.” I am not defined by my decisions but instead, I am defined by a loving decision Christ made for me. “For our sake he made him
“Do you really think God made you – uniquely, wonderful you – and wanted you to deny your true self because it might be off-putting to others? I can’t believe that’s true.”
As followers of Christ, we must be careful what we’re reading and more importantly what we’re choosing to believe. It’s not harmless to read books filled with the above messages that are built upon self-help, live for yourself and your dreams philosophies. It’s dangerous. And it’s what we’re warned about in scripture.
– “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from
Before you purchase Rachel Hollis’s book that just released “Girl, Stop Apologizing” consider a few more verses from Timothy and Peter.
“Evil people and imposters will become worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed.” II Tim. 3:13-14
“There were indeed false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought
I know it’s what everyone is reading right now and if you do decide to read Girl, Stop Apologizing please do so with a discerning heart.

Amen sister in Christ. We are who God says we are NOT who we say we are! Praise the Lord for this because He’s the Creator and we the creation.

Thanks for sharing this. I have not read her book, but now I know that I do not want to. We always need to line up what others say with God’s truth!

Yes – or read it with that discerning heart and spit out what’s not Truth. My reason in reading it is to know what message our world and many Christian women are reading. My prayer is that shedding light onto some of her stuff will cause a second look at what she’s saying.

I just posted about this a couple of days ago. Thx for “getting” it! That philosophy “I gotta do what makes me happy,” is what destroyed my marriage. So that thinking is pervading the church, and it makes me SO sad…
Melody Hester says
Ugh, yes, so true about that type of thinking invading our churches.
Lauren Sparks says
I haven’t read her, but have heard from others that it is self-help drivel, so I was very curious about your review. Thank you. laurensparks.net
Melody Hester says
Yes, Lauren, the self-help movement is leading a lot of people astray.

Interesting that two bloggers posted on my link today – you being one, and another later in the day – opposite viewpoints – check it out! When I saw her movie I enjoyed her intent which to me was, ‘Get off the couch and do what you really are meant to do!” She’s a cheerleader for couch potatoes. But I didn’t need it and wondered why it is published by a Christian publisher. Wonder if they learned a lesson and didn’t do number two book? I’ll have to check. What I like about her message is: stop sitting on the sidelines of your life. What I don’t like is self-dependence, self-promotion, and egalitarian – all roads lead to God. Good job, friend.

Sue….I found the article you referenced and I really enjoyed reading it. I liked her spirit even though we land in different places on the book. I find it more harmful than she does. I’m linking to her blog post here in case anyone else wants to read for a different opinion.

Yeah, I hear what you’re saying but her definition of what you are really “meant to do” and what God has called us as Christ-followers to do are worlds apart. But I really love her and think she has a lot of grit and ambition. I respect that.

“What concerns me is new believers reading Hollis and forming worldviews based on her self help philosophies. Or Christians who aren’t discerning the difference between truth and heresy.” <3 I always ask myself, "how would the youngest believer reading this understand it?" We have to be discerning not just for our own spiritual sake, but for the spiritual sake of younger sisters! If we as mature believers recommend this book with it's heresy, we are putting young believers in danger!
I read the other book review Sue Donaldson recommended, but couldn't agree with Michelle's take. She said she was filtering Hollis' statements through Scripture, but I felt as though she was really doing the opposite – filtering Scripture through points from the book.
Anyway, I believe there are many false teachers out there right now and it's sad and scary how much the Church is welcoming in.
Melody Hester says
Debbi – you make some great points here and I agree that we are putting young believers in danger.

Yes!!! Yes yes yes!!! You nailed it!! My husband and I were just having this conversation. Rachel is a great motivational speaker and author. But she is not a Christian motivational speaker and author. She may use “biblical concepts” which she alters to fit her and her lifestyle. I have read Girl, Go Wah Your Face and I’m almost finished with Girl, Stop Apologizing. She has some points that are encouraging in both books, but you absolutely have to sift through the misguided and watered down spiritual advice. If you view her as a great motivational speaker and author and NOT as a spiritual leader you may learn a thing or two about yourself. As in everything, test it against God’s Word as you have in this blog… great job!!
