We’ve been talking this week about sharing Jesus Christ in the public sector, at work, home and at play. You can catch the first post here. Today I want to share some simple ways we can steer conversations towards the Gospel message. Whether at work, home or play these things will help you get started:
- Tattle Tale. Be a childish tattle tale but let it be on God. J
ust like we did as kids and told what the other kid did we are going to tell what God did. Tattle Telling on God is totally scriptural. All through the Psalms, we see phrases like:
*I will tell of all your wonders; *let me tell you what He has done for me; *tell of all His wondrous works; *proclaim among the nations what he has done. These are just a sampling of many other verses that tell us to shout, proclaim, tell, sing and testify to God’s amazing works.
Where have you seen God work? The little ways and big ways. You may have to train yourself first to recognize where God is working and what he’s doing. I’m a big fan of journals and Evernote on my phone so I can jot down those things when I’m aware of them but might be quick to forget later. Practice sharing what God is doing in your life with people you’re comfortable sharing with. Family. Small group. Church friends. Then move that to your workplace or grocery store line and be ready to share it. You may think nobody cares what God did in your life but that’s just it……God is working behind the scenes in ways we don’t even know about. It’s not about us and “our little story” but instead it’s all about God and when we talk about Him and his works you can know He is right there in that moment. He will give us those words and help us make the most of those opportunities. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Just be prepared to share and then listen for God’s timing. You will know when it’s time to share those things.
2. Encourage with scripture & prayer. Don’t underestimate the extreme power of prayer on behalf of your coworkers. And then if you feel God is impressing on your heart to tell them that you are praying for them jot them a note. Many people – even people who aren’t Christians are open to being prayed for. You might be surprised how touched people are to know that someone is praying for them. Even if you don’t know the person really well it’s okay to pray for them and then tell them you’re praying for them. That might seem weird but it’s effective when it’s coming from a sincere and genuine heart. Also, praying a verse of scripture for someone is powerful and touching. You can write out that verse in a notecard to tell them how you’re praying for them.
3. Celebrate with others. The world is out to serve themselves. Climbing the corporate ladder leaves no room for the praise and accolades of others. But Christ tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and to weep with those who weep. So being willing to rejoice with a coworker’s accomplishment is something that God calls us to. He will use this. It just might be the thing that paves the way for a future conversation between you and that person.
4. Share your conversion story. God’s miracle of saving your soul from death to life is the greatest thing that has ever happened to you. And nothing will ever compare to the greatness of that divine rescue. Nothing. So that’s one of your greatest tools in sharing Jesus with others. Even if you were saved as a child that’s still an amazing story of how you were being called into a relationship with Jesus. His love for children still stands and your coworker just might need to know that God saves children. He can save her/his children. Have you ever written out your conversion story? If not, it would be a great exercise. I have a great document I can send you if are interested in writing your testimony. It helps you break it down into three parts. Simple and to the point. Just shoot me an email and I’ll send it to you.
As you can see none of these points include standing up in a staff meeting and opening your Bible to John 3:16 and preaching the Gospel. I’m not knocking it and maybe God gives you the chance to do that one day but chances are most of your effective evangelism is going to show up in loving others well and putting into practice the life skills God gives us in his word. When you simply live as a godly man or woman then I believe divine appointments and opportunities that you’ve been praying about will open so wide you can’t help but know God is doing this stuff. And this is how we’ll reach the nations for Christ. One little workplace, homeplace and play place at a time.
