At midnight Randy and I were doing the night-before-the birthday-party-scramble and wondering whose idea it was to plan a painting party for 22 kids under the age of 11. It was a Saige (American Girl Doll who is an artist) birthday party and each child painted a hot air balloon canvas that Randy pre-sketched.
Sophie practiced painting on the canvas earlier in the week and so we had a few samples to show everyone. We were using tempera paints which worked just fine. We chose to paint hot air balloons because there’s a section in the movie where Saige and her friends are in a hot air balloon. Yeah, we chose the five second clip in the entire movie and built a party theme around it. Ha! The kids did such a great job painting and were so creative with their designs. I was surprised there were no paint or water spills with that many kids. I wasn’t worried about it but just figured it would happen. I freak about glitter but not paint. Go figure.
The girls played upstairs in Sophie’s room for a bit and the two boys from Sophie’s class who came hung out in Mitchell’s room playing with lego’s and the gerbils. I had to laugh because I went upstairs at one point and three girls were jumping on the bed, one was in the story tub chillin’ and two had the gerbils by their tails. That’s when I uttered a “be careful” over my shoulder as I walked back downstairs and hoped it wouldn’t change a thing they were doing because how fun is it to jump on your friend’s bed?
And what would a birthday party with a bunch of girls be without some drama? Sophie caught her hand in the door and hurt her finger pretty bad and then later when hitting the piñata a piece of candy came flying out and hit her in the forehead really hard. We all heard it hit. She cried. We got ice and I heard a fellow Mom say “present time”. Brilliant because that made everything better. I had a hard time not laughing which is horrible but it really was ironic….the birthday girl getting pegged with candy out of the piñata. One for the records. And we’ll laugh about it when the knot goes down.
Yes I know….I wish she had picked another finger to point out her blow pop induced injury but she didn’t.
Sophie got Saige for her birthday from her Grandmother. Of course she was so thrilled.
Sophie is so blessed to have such sweet friends. They were so generous and gave her such nice gifts. We are still in shock at how much stuff she got. Overwhelmed really. She’s been playing with everything she got all afternoon long.
I made several boneheaded hostess moves (forgot the drinks, etc) and I’m just thankful I have friends who pick up the slack. A Mom squad just picks up and helps out where needed without being asked. I feel blessed to have friends like that. And at the end of the day I think everyone had a good time in the midst of the pure chaos!
Sophie…..we love your spunk, your sweet heart, your independence and your love for life. We see the fruit of the Spirit in you and we continue to pray that God will use your life to bring glory to His name. Happy Birthday sweetheart! We love you.
