If you have an elementary age kid then you know about these
Rainbow Loom bracelets! They are really fun to make. Looms are around $15 and rubber bands run $3-4 a bag including c clips. It’s complicated at first glance but these kids catch on so fast. Youtube is the first place you want to go when you bring home one of these kits. Search Rainbow Loom tutorial and you can pause your way through the steps of making a bracelet.
So some of the kids at our school got together today after school for a Rainbow Loom Party. It was only for an hour and these kids were awesome. I fell in love with the fact that they didn’t complain when the food ran out. Yeah, that was an epic party fail but I thought maybe 25 kids max would show up for this spontaneous party that was thrown together last Thursday afternoon. Tiny slips of paper when home in carpool announcing the casual shindig and so when 45 kids showed up it was a bit of a surprise.
The other thing that impressed me is that these kids cranked out the bracelets for a Community outreach project called Operation In As Much that our church and school will be participating in on October 19th. It’s where churches from all over come together to serve our community in a number of different ways. One of our projects is giving away coats and shoes at a park as well as setting up kid related booths. We’ll have a Rainbow Loom table where we give away free bracelets and teach kids how to make them. So all 132 bracelets made today will be given away at the park.
We bagged up the bracelets, had a verse of scripture printed out and the kids colored a picture of God’s love on the back – I know, how can you do that? But that’s what I told the kids to do: draw a picture of what you think of when you think of God’s love. But they produced some pretty amazing artwork on God’s love. I should have taken pictures. Once we collected all the bracelets and put them in a basket we gathered around them and prayed over them. Asked God to bless the kids who would receive these bracelets and for them to know of God’s love. It was a sweet time of prayer. Loved the kids heart- felt prayers.
We will come back tomorrow for more rainbow looming after school. Our goal is 300 bracelets. I have a feeling we’ll make it but if not, that’s okay. These kids were so excited about taking part in this project and I am so proud of them. I watched a true spirit of community today. The older kids teaching the younger kids how to make bracelets by hand. Some kids shared their looms with others. Younger kids bagging bracelets for older kids and even a first grade boy who hit the floor fast to pick up when we had a rubber band spill. I know it’s the school my kids attend but I was totally impressed with these students today. They are awesome!

have found that it is really popular among the 3-6th grade students however the 7th and 8th graders really like them and want them but sorta don’t want to be caught dead with a loom like the lower elementary kids. So they just get the younger kids to make them for them. But what I love is that there are more complicated designs that only your older kids could do so it really is a great project for both young and old.
